Types of
Vitamin D
The two major forms
of vitamin D are D2 and D3.
Vitamin D3, also
known as cholecalciferol, is the form of vitamin D that is natural
to all animal life, including human. Vitamin D2 is derived by
irradiating fungi to produce ergocalciferol. Ergocalciferol
does not naturally occur in the human body unless it is added
by supplementation. In most mammals including humans, D3 is
more effective than D2 at increasing 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the
circulating reservoir of the vitamin D hormone.
Vitamin D3 plays
an important role on regulating the amounts of calcium and phosphorus
in the blood. According to the University of Maryland Medical
Center, vitamin d can also help prevent osteoporosis, bone disorder,
osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes Etc.
Vitamin D is called
the "sunshine vitamin" because it is formed in the
skin by the action of ultraviolet rays from the sun. For fair
skinned individuals, 15 minutes of sunlight will produce enough
Vitamin D to last for several days, even when wearing light
clothing. However, it takes 3 hours or more for this to happen
with dark-skinned people.
Sunlight is a natural
source of vitamin D; however due to the fact that many Americans
avoid sun exposure for particular reasons, now vitamin D deficiency
is being consider an epidemic in this country. Ppeople age 50
and over have a higher risk of developing vitamin D3 deficiency.
The ability of skin to convert sunlight to vitamin D3 is decreased
in older people.
Since Vitamin D occurs
naturally in only a few foods, experts worry that Americans
get too little vitamin D; even foods such as oily fish and eggs
contain only very small amounts. It is almost impossible to
obtain sufficient amounts of vitamin D from diet alone.
"If vitamin
D is good for you, and exposure to the sun is bad for you, what
do you do?" Lichtenfeld explained.
The answer may lie
in balancing sunshine with vitamin D supplements.
Diseases caused by
Vitamin D deficiency
According to the
a report by the American Cancer Association (article 2006/05/27)
the groups that are at great risk of having too little vitamin
D are:
- elderly people
- babies who are
exclusively breast-fed
- people with dark
skin (darker-skinned people need more sun exposure to make
vitamin D)
- people who don't
get any sun exposure (those who are housebound or who cover
their bodies with clothing for religious or cultural reasons)
- people who live
in the northern US and Canada in winter (above 37 degrees
latitude)
Vitamin D
and Cancer
A scientist study
released in 2005 by the American Journal of Public Health correlates
the benefit of Vitamin D intake and prevention of cancer. The
scientists claim that an additional daily intake of 1,000 international
units (IU) of vitamin D could lower an individual’s cancer
risk by 50% in colon cancer, and by 30% in breast and ovarian
cancer.
