CINNAMON 6—FIRST CHOICE NATURAL APPROACH FOR Healthy Blood Sugar
Diabetes mellitus is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States with more than 20-million Americans at risk. Most people with the disease have Type Two or non-insulin, dependent diabetes. This form of the disease tends to occur later in life. Even more ominously, more than one out of five American adults have a dangerous combination of health risks known as syndrome X, a cluster of pre-diabetic symptoms such as high blood sugar levels, hypertension (high blood pressure), abnormalities of blood clotting, high triglyceride levels, and imbalances in high density lipoprotein (good) and low-density lipoprotein. People with syndrome X are at especially high risk for diabetes.
In our research, one product that consistently stands out is Cinnamon 6, the formula that Dr. James Chappell, a frequent contributor to The Doctors' Prescription for Healthy Living, developed in response to the loss of his own mother due to diabetes-related complications (as detailed in A Promise Made, A Promise Kept: One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes [BL Publications, 2005]). We've heard extremely positive comments from users of this product, particularly in the form of unsolicited testimonials (see sidebar). This should not be surprising. While herbalists have known for some time that cinnamon is one of the most powerful natural spices for maintaining healthy blood sugar, the media has only focused its attention on this herb since 2003 when studies suggested its efficacy. In one study, conducted in Pakistan, people with type two diabetes who took cinnamon powder daily had blood sugar levels that were 20 percent lower than those who took no cinnamon. The American Diabetes Association suggests a half-teaspoon of cinnamon daily to aid blood-sugar regulation. In March 2007, researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Center, in Beltsville, Maryland, stated categorically, “Cinnamon improves glucose and lipid profiles of people with type 2 diabetes.” They noted the herb's water-soluble portions and polyphenols “display insulin-like activity.” Their own study results suggested cinnamon “exhibits the potential to increase the amount of proteins involved in insulin signaling, glucose transport, and anti inflammatory/antiangiogenesis response.” But what makes Cinnamon 6 produce such wonderful results goes beyond cinnamon.
Here are six additional important herbs and nutrients Dr. Chappell combined with the cinnamon:
-Gymnema sylvestre has been shown to have a strong hypoglycemic action due to indirect stimulation of insulin secretion by the pancreas.
- Fenugreek helps to reduce gastrointestinal glucose and cholesterol absorption and increase bile acid excretion.
-Bitter melon, an herb found in the Amazon, as well as East Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, contains gurmarin, a polypeptide similar to insulin that has been shown in experimental studies to achieve a positive sugar-regulating effect by suppressing the neural response to sweet taste stimuli. This helps the body to increase insulin secretion, therefore increasing glucose uptake.
-American Ginseng has been shown to be an effective blood-glucose modulator. In fact, doses as small as one gram of American ginseng can help lower the body's glycemic response after eating carbohydrates.
-Prickly pear cactus—known as nopal in Mexico— is well documented for its use in helping
maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Mexican researchers found that people with non-insulin dependent diabetes given broiled nopal stems experienced a large drop in blood sugar levels. Daily consumption of only 250 mg will lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, according to a recent study.
-The sixth support ingredient is not an herb at all but rather the most important healthy blood sugar mineral known (and one in which 90 percent of Americans are deficient): chromium. Cinnamon 6 contains arguably the best absorbed form of this mineral, which is chromium polynicotinate. A University of California study reports that this form of chromium is over 300 percent more bioavailable than chromium picolinate and almost 700 percent more bioavailable than chromium chloride.
THE DOCTORS' PRESCRIPTION
Diabetes is a serious health condition but one for which there is hope. When combined with a healthy diet emphasizing whole grains, leafy green vegetables and other fresh fruits as well as exercise, herbal and nutritional supplements can truly help. While natural health doctors and experts are strong advocates of this powerful contingent of herbal helpers that seem to really work well for patients, if you're seeking additional natural health support, it is important to note medical doctors advise that patients continue using all of their prescribed medications and that they do not change their regimen unless they are working with their treating physician. Only your doctor can allow you to reduce your medicine. However, there are no negative reactions with any medicines reported for Cinnamon 6. As you show your doctor your continuous progress he or she may adjust you medicine accordingly. Some people notice results in as little as one week and almost always within six week. The usual recommendation for Cinnamon 6 is to take one tablet per 50 pounds of body weight before each meal. At the end of the month, allow three to five days for of nonuse, and then resume. Resources Cinnamon 6 is available at health food stores and natural food markets nationwide as well as online.
