Here is what is included in one liquid coral mineral supplement: “Purified water, glycerin USP (vegetable), crystalline fructose, citric acid, natural flavors, colloidal silver, xanthan gum, potassium benzoate and potassium sorbate used as preservatives…” The extra ingredients for yet another, very wellknown brand were microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, acacia gum, modified cellulose gum, colloidal silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate. The proper and limited use of additives in small doses is acceptable; many companies, including some recommended in this magazine, use them. Yet, from a market perspective, we see more and more savvy shoppers favoring limits on these when possible. Consumers and companies alike are striving for ultimate purity in the fast-growth market of additive- free nutritional supplements.
SOMETHING EVEN SCARIER
But there was something even worse we found with too many products. You, the consumer, aren’t being told very much about where your coral is being obtained. Basically, there is below-sea coral taken from live marine coral reefs and above-sea coral taken from ancient, now land-bound reefs from thousands of years ago. There is so much at stake with our coral reefs, and taking coral from live reefs is not good for their overall health. Because of global warming, coral reefs of today are endangered, and some are shrinking. Their loss is one of the first major signs of big changes in ocean temperature. It makes sense, then, to do what is right to protect our future: That means we should take care of our reefs, not heap even more damage onto them.
THE GOOD…
