Selenium is regarded as one of the most important of the essential trace minerals. Selenium was found in the stony coral samples tested at the level of less than 0.08 ppm. (Halstead) Selenium helps to prevent oxygen damage to the cell membrane. The structural integrity of the cell membrane is critical to the proper uptake of nutrients and to the elimination of toxic wastes. Almost half of a man’s body’s supply is concentrated in the testicles and portions of the seminal ducts adjacent to the prostate gland. Selenium can also alleviate hot flashes and menopausal distress. (Lepore) It is generally recommended to supplement selenium between 50 and 200 mcg. Higher doses than this have been associated with toxicity. Signs of selenium toxicity include nausea and vomiting emotional instability and a garlic odor on the breath and skin, and in extreme cases, loss of hair and fingernails.
