Coral minerals are among the best, studied whole food supplement today. A rich source of predigested calcium, they uniquely offer more than 70 trace minerals known or thought to be necessary to human health.

Coral minerals are great for consumers because they do provide predigested calcium and trace minerals in a mineral matrix that provides all of the elemental cofactors necessary for absorption and use. This body-friendly nature of coral is why bone graft doctors use the material for their work as well. Our research at DPHL uncovered fascinating studies demonstrating the benefits of coral minerals for absorption, healthy cells, and building bone, both clinically and experimentally. Although the studies do not use the massive study numbers we would love to see, the entire nutrition market for calcium supplements is trending towards the whole food sources. This will position coral minerals for a big sales increase among consumers. Indeed, it would be hard to go wrong with a perfect coral supplement. But, the road to perfection is fraught with imperfect impostors, some of which our investigative market team uncovered for you with a recent online foray into the good, the bad and the ugly on the road to the perfect coral calcium supplement.

THE BAD…

Here is the label of additives for one tableted coral calcium product’s “other ingredients”: gelatin, silicon dioxide, cellulose, magnesium stearate. Contains soy. Here are the “other ingredients” for another product: gelatin, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide. Here is what is included in one liquid coral mineral supplement: “Purified water, glycerin USP (vegetable), crystalline fructose, citric acid, natural flavors, colloidal silver, xanthan gum, potassium benzoate and potassium sorbate used as preservatives…” The extra ingredients for yet another, very wellknown brand were microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, acacia gum, modified cellulose gum, colloidal silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate. The proper and limited use of additives in small doses is acceptable; many companies, including some recommended in this magazine, use them. Yet, from a market perspective, we see more and more savvy shoppers favoring limits on these when possible. Consumers and companies alike are striving for ultimate purity in the fast-growth market of additive- free nutritional supplements.

SOMETHING EVEN SCARIER

But there was something even worse we found with too many products. You, the consumer, aren’t being told very much about where your coral is being obtained. Basically, there is below-sea coral taken from live marine coral reefs and above-sea coral taken from ancient, now land-bound reefs from thousands of years ago. There is so much at stake with our coral reefs, and taking coral from live reefs is not good for their overall health. Because of global warming, coral reefs of today are endangered, and some are shrinking. Their loss is one of the first major signs of big changes in ocean temperature. It makes sense, then, to do what is right to protect our future: That means we should take care of our reefs, not heap even more damage onto them.

THE GOOD…

There are indeed other brands without additives— but only Coral LLC has gone public and demanded these higher standards and become the de facto leader in the field by doing what works best: putting value on purity. Pure is the right word for coral taken from some 10 thousand years before the industrial revolution. Geological studies show the earth was then greatly freer from lead and other metal contaminants. Always prefer above-sea eco-safe coral. Additive- and filler-free is what so many leading companies are aiming for, and challenging themselves to improve in. So when you’re shopping, be careful out there. Coral calcium indeed offers unique health benefits, but be sure you go for the best and leave the inferior brands for the rest. You have the power to shop for your health and our planet’s health.
